Peles Castle

the former residence of the Romanian Royale family

In 1871 Carol I bought the land from Eforia Spitalelor, 1000 ha. In this area, between 1873 and 1875 they made the foundation. The ceremony for the foundation stone was taken in August 1875.
The Architects for the first phase of construction (1879 – 1883) are Wilhelm von Doderer and Johannes Schultz, then Émile André Lecomte du Noüy and Karel Liman.

Peleș Castle has a 3,200-square-metre floor plan with over 170 rooms. There are offices, libraries, armories, art galleries
by style (Florentine, Turkish, Moorish) and apartments.
In 1884 they installed the electric system, and in 1897 was built an electric plant.
Between 1906 – 1914 they arrange the terraces and gardens. The central tower was built in 1906, and one year later they installed the clock.

From the beginning, Peles has central heating, electric elevator, dumbwaiter, central vacuum cleaner, electric system. Also telephone, telegraph.

Carol the 1st lived here 6 months per year, Peles Castle being the summer residence.
The communist regime nationalized the palace in 1948. Peles became a museum from 1953 until 1975. Just after the 1989 revolution, it became a museum again.
Now It’s the property of the Romanian Royale family, from 2007, but it’s administered by the Romanian state.
There are two available tours for the tourist. The standard tour includes only the ground floor and the extended tour is on the ground floor and the 1st floor.
