Transfagarasan

the most beautiful road in the world

This is one of Romania’s most famous attractions thanks to Top Gear’s Jeremy Clarkson. He named it ‘the best driving road in the world’. One of the reasons why Transfaragaran Road is a must-see in Romania.

The Transfagarasan was finalized in 1974 after almost five years of hard work. It’s a major creation of the communist regime under Nicolae Ceausescu.

It reaches its highest altitude of 2,042 meters close to Balea Lake. So, this makes it the second-highest road in the country after Transalpina Road (2,145 meters).

The idea of a road that cross the highest mountains in Romania came after The Prague Spring. Its purpose was a military one. Because we have army bases in Sibiu and Campulung Muscel, Ceausescu came with this idea to build a secret road for the army to cross in 24 hours the mountains.

In conclusion, now we have the most beautiful road in the world and the main tourist attraction. We invite you to come to enjoy the spectacular view from July 1st to the end of October. During winter, the highest part is closed for driving, but we have the chance (if the weather permit) to go by cable car on the northern side up to Balea Lake.
